Black History Month Special: Monique Chatman on Ownership, Community, and the Future of Equal Grounds

In honor of Black History Month, GSL News sat down with Monique Chatman, the owner of Equal Grounds coffee shop in Rochester, New York, to discuss independent business ownership, inclusive leadership, and community preservation.
A longtime customer turned entrepreneur, Chatman officially took ownership of the iconic South Wedge neighborhood staple in early 2024. In the interview, she reflected on her journey navigating the local business landscape as a Black woman entrepreneur, noting the unique responsibility of maintaining a space that has served as a sanctuary for the LGBTQ+ community and Rochester residents for nearly two decades.
Chatman shared her long-term vision for brewing community, emphasizing the vital role that inclusive spaces play in neighborhood stability. She detailed her strategic approach to honoring the historic legacy of the coffee shop while simultaneously infusing the business with new energy, programming, and operational updates to ensure its longevity for future generations.
