ROCHESTER, N.Y. — As a punishing heat wave holds its grip on the Rochester region, Monroe County officials are taking emergency measures to ensure local families have a safe place to find relief from the soaring temperatures.
County Executive Adam Bello announced that operational hours at major local waterfront areas and spray parks have officially been extended to 8 PM today. The decision comes at a critical time for the community; while a relentless stretch of high humidity and intense heat continues to bake the area, most area water parks and traditional neighborhood cooling sites remain closed or operate on tightly restricted schedules.
The extension applies directly to swimming areas and the spray park at Ontario Beach Park, allowing residents to stay in the water well past the typical late-afternoon cutoff. Lifeguards and park staff will remain on duty through the extended evening hours to ensure public safety.
County officials remind residents to take proactive measures during this period of extreme weather, including staying hydrated, checking on vulnerable neighbors, and limiting strenuous outdoor activity during peak sunlight hours.
GSL News will continue to track local weather alerts and community cooling updates as this heat wave persists.
