A high-speed vehicle pursuit initiated by the New York State Police came to a fatal conclusion late Friday morning when a fleeing suspect collided head-on with an oncoming vehicle, causing an immediate explosion and fire on Lake Avenue.
The incident began at approximately 10:14 AM when members of the State Police Community Stabilization Unit attempted to execute a traffic stop on a 2009 Ford Fusion for multiple vehicle and traffic law violations near the intersection of Hudson Avenue and Avenue D. The operator refused to comply with emergency signals and accelerated rapidly, leading troopers on a dynamic pursuit through several northeast quadrant neighborhoods.
As the fleeing vehicle transitioned onto Lake Avenue, State Police investigators successfully deployed a tire deflation device near Seneca Parkway to disable the vehicle. The partially disabled Ford Fusion continued traveling southbound at a high rate of speed, sideswiping a 2011 GMC Acadia before crossing completely over the center line into the northbound lanes, where it struck an oncoming 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee head-on.
The force of the impact caused the suspect's vehicle to instantly burst into heavy flames. Responding troopers deployed personal fire extinguishers and attempted high-risk rescue maneuvers to pull the driver from the wreckage, but they were driven back by the intensity and rapid spread of the fire. The operator of the Ford Fusion, later identified by authorities as 38-year-old Tyson Thomas, was trapped inside the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.
The occupants of the oncoming vehicles sustained varying injuries during the multi-car collision. The driver of the sideswiped GMC Acadia was evaluated by emergency medical personnel at the scene and reported no injuries. Inside the Jeep Grand Cherokee, the operator and a rear-seat passenger sustained minor, non-life-threatening injuries, while a front-seat passenger was transported to Strong Memorial Hospital with serious injuries and remains in stable condition.
A massive multi-agency response from the Rochester Police Department, Monroe County Sheriff's Office, and Rochester Fire Department closed down a multi-block stretch of Lake Avenue for several hours while specialized Collision Reconstruction and Forensic Identification units processed the wreckage. Because the incident involved a fatality during a law enforcement encounter, the New York State Attorney General’s Office has launched an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the pursuit, in strict accordance with state executive law.
