Hillside staff persuade 11-year-old boy armed with knife out of Lake Riley after 30-minute dialogue

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Emergency personnel and youth support staff responded to Lake Riley in Cobb's Hill Park off Culver Road after an 11-year-old boy armed with a knife entered the water.
Staff members from nearby Hillside engaged with the youth directly, maintaining calm communication for approximately 30 minutes before successfully persuading him to safely exit the lake without further incident.
First responders on scene evaluated the boy immediately after he stepped ashore to ensure his physical health and well-being. Officials confirmed no injuries were reported in connection with the response.
Community support teams and local authorities worked together to secure the area and ensure the child received appropriate care and evaluation following the resolution.
