WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Thursday ordering the federal government to change the name of Lake Ontario to "Lake America," marking the latest escalation in growing trade disputes between the U.S. and Canada.
Speaking from the Oval Office, Trump stated that the U.S. Interior Department and relevant agencies have been instructed to update geographic information systems and official federal documents to reflect the new designation.
The presidential directive updates how U.S. federal agencies refer to the body of water. However, because Lake Ontario is an international water body shared with Canada, the executive order affects domestic federal usage and does not alter official Canadian naming conventions.
